Over 100 special recipes created by Ireland’s top chefs for adults living with kidney disease. Compiled by kidney transplant recipient Valerie Twomey.

Valerie brought her life experience of time spent on dialysis together with her passion and professionalism to produce what is generally considered the best ‘renal cookbook’ internationally. Valerie wanted to produce a book that could stand proudly alongside any of the commercial ‘celebrity chef’ publications and also offer recipes that would appeal to all the family – she certainly achieved that.

Through working with members of the Renal Interest Group of the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute, Valerie challenged many of our top celebrity chefs to produce recipes that would make meal time enjoyable for people on a renal diet. She committed an enormous amount of time and personal money to the project because she believed in the importance of what she was doing. The renal diet has often been viewed as both restrictive and bland but the creativity of the chefs has brought forward a great selection of ‘truly tasty’ recipes in the book that are enhanced by top quality food photography.

Valerie passed away in 2018. A passionate tennis player and coach, her gentleness combined with a steely determination always made a big impression on everyone she met. She was an active member of the Cork branch of the Irish Kidney Association and she also competed for Transplant Team Ireland at a number of international events. She has left a wonderful legacy to the renal community in the form of Truly Tasty.
