Haemodialysis Holidays

Haemodialysis Holidays

The IKA has secured accommodation in Oceano Atlântico, Portimão, Portugal (website here) for haemodialysis patients holidays. The studio apartment, which has one double bedroom, can accommodate four people. It is self-catering apartment and transfers from Faro Airport will take an hour. The apartment is secured for April, May, September and October 2019.

If you would like to avail of a week in this free accommodation, please express your interest to Deborah, our Holiday Coordinator. Haemodialysis will have to be secured and booked separately. There is a Fresenius Haemodialysis Clinic, ten minutes walk from the apartment, which accepts the EHIC card for dialysis. Kindly note that you will have to fund your own flights and journey to the apartment. Priority will be given to those patients who have not travelled abroad previously and who, otherwise, would not be in a position to afford it. Air Lingus offer flights from Dublin, Cork, Shannon and Belfast to Faro. Ryanair offer flights from Dublin, Cork, Kerry, Knock, Shannon and Belfast. If you have never received dialysis treatment abroad it is essential that you talk to your nurses and doctors about undertaking a trip like this. The Fresenius Unit, if it is available, will not block-book spaces for anyone and will require a medical report from your unit – early! Irish patients have used this facility and it complies with the strict standards that your unit will insist upon. So, if you wish to consider a week in April or May it is necessary to commence the process now. May I caution you to never book a flight before you secure your dialysis treatment.

Deborah has vast experience of booking patients throughout the world but, particularly, in Europe. So if you wish to consider a different location – do speak to Deborah in Donor House, 01-6205306. We expect to have our new Holiday house in Killarney ready for occupation by May 2019. The forms for Tralee and Tramore, along with Killarney, will be available at the end of January.

  2. Hi Deborah, could I please have some info on the holidays in Ireland and how the dialysis coincides there? My partner hasn’t started but is waiting to be called for his fistula and we’ve decided to not go abroad with the kids as we’re nervous in case he’s started dialysis at that stage.
